The books that built a school

In July 2023, Inma was traveling through Uganda with a friend, combining safari visits with stops in local communities. Along the way, her driver suggested visiting Katunguru. She stopped, bought some school supplies for the children, and decided to see the foundation herself.
What she found left a strong impression. The youngest children were gathered in a space without proper walls, floor, or roof. Around twenty five small children were learning in mud, exposed to weather and difficult conditions.
When she returned to Spain, she decided to act. She wrote a solidarity book about her experience and sold it among friends to raise funds to build a nursery. The project became reality. A second edition of the book helped raise more money, which was used to create a small playground for the children. Later, she shared the foundation’s story within the pharmaceutical company where she works, selling 100 copies and donating the proceeds to help purchase land for a new school building.
Wanting to do more, she launched a new project. She collected story ideas from the children themselves and turned them into a book about their daily lives and imagination. First published in Spanish, it was later translated into English so it could also be sold in Uganda. Despite logistical challenges in sending the books, she managed to arrange their delivery to the community, where they can now be sold to generate ongoing support for the school.
Through her writing and fundraising, she continues to contribute to the growth of the foundation and the future of its children.
“I saw the situation and decided I had to do something. Helping them changed me. Seeing their smiles and their progress is the biggest reward.”
