From Visitor to Sponsor

Jeanine always dreamed of visiting Africa. As a teacher from the Netherlands, she was especially interested in learning how education worked in different parts of the world. After completing an internship in Cape Town during her studies, the idea of returning to Africa stayed with her. While searching for volunteer opportunities, she connected with someone who had worked in Uganda. After hearing about the experience and seeing photos, she decided to travel there and volunteer at a school.

Jeanine spent time teaching at a school in Bukomansimbi and also traveled through Uganda with a tour guide. During a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park, the guide suggested stopping at a nearby community called Katunguru. As a teacher, Jeanine was curious to see another school and understand how education worked there.

When she arrived, she was surprised by the conditions. The school had very few resources and limited materials for the children. However, what stood out to her most was the motivation of the students and their desire to learn. After speaking with Abel and hearing the stories of the children, Jeanine decided she wanted to help. She organised a small fundraising effort and returned to the community with donated materials including laptops, printers, and books. During that visit she met a student named Leticia. Jeanine noticed that Leticia was older than many of the children in the school and wanted to continue her education at another school, but she could not afford it. Jeanine decided to sponsor her.

Since then, Jeanine has stayed in contact with the community. Abel regularly sends updates about Leticia, including photos, school reports, and sometimes letters or videos. For Jeanine, seeing Leticia in her school uniform and watching her progress has been deeply meaningful. Jeanine’s story is a reminder that sometimes a single visit can turn into a long lasting connection and a real opportunity for a child’s future.

“The best feeling is knowing you can help someone far away who truly needs it. Seeing Leticia doing well in school makes it all worth it.”
